A Japanese fugitive is now detained in the Bureau of Immigration (BI) Warden Facility at Camp Bagong Diwa, Bicutan, Taguig City, following receipt of information by the BI about his involvement in deceptive practices and theft against his fellow Japanese citizens.

Sasaki Takashi, 43, was arrested by operatives from the BI, the Philippine National Police Intelligence Group (PNP-IG), and personnel from the San Pablo City Police Station at a house in Savana Village, San Pablo City, Laguna.

Sasaki is said to be involved with the infamous "Luffy Gang", who victimize the elderly by impersonating police or bank officials, purportedly conducting investigations.

He obtained automated teller machine (ATM) cards from elderly Japanese individuals and stole their financial information for fraudulent purposes.

The Tokyo Summary Court issued a warrant of arrest against Sasaki in January 2023 for violations of Japan's Penal Code.

"Takashi is a fugitive from justice wanted by the Japanese government for theft and fraud, targeting vulnerable individuals. His presence in the Philippines endangers our communities and undermines our commitment to maintaining security and order," said BI Commissioner Jose Viado.

"This arrest underscores the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies in protecting the public from transnational crimes. We will continue to strengthen our partnerships with both local and international agencies to ensure that the Philippines does not become a haven for fugitives," he added.

Documents are being prepared for Sasaki's deportation.
