The death toll has risen to 19 in the wake of the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck southern Mindanao this morning, June 8, 2026, with the epicenter located in Sarangani.
In an interview with Junie Castillo, the spokesperson for the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), 16 of the fatalities were reported in Region XII, and the remaining three were in the Davao Region.
Search and rescue operations continue across various provinces in southern Mindanao affected by the powerful earthquake.
At 7:37 AM on June 8th, the 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Mindanao, with its epicenter in Maasim, Sarangani.
The earthquake's intensity reached Level 7 in General Santos City, Level 6 in Palimbang, and Senator Ninoy Aquino in Sultan Kudarat, Level 5 in Davao City, City of Kidapawan, and Carmen, Cotabato; Bagumbayan, Kalamansig, and President Quirino, Sultan Kudarat; Sibuco and Siocon, Zamboanga Del Norte, and Level 4 in City of Mati, Davao Oriental, Buug, Zamboanga Sibugay, Caraga, Manay, and Tarragona, Davao Oriental.
Instrumental intensities registered were: Intensity VIII in Malapatan, Sarangani; Intensity VII in City of Koronadal, South Cotabato, and Santa Maria, Davao Occidental; Intensity VI in City of General Santos and T'boli, South Cotabato; Intensity V in Maasim, Sarangani, Santo Niño, Surallah, South Cotabato, Isulan, Lebak, and President Quirino, Sultan Kudarat; City of Davao, City of Digos, and Magsaysay, Davao Del Sur; Intensity IV in Kiamba, Malungon, Sarangani, Banga, Tupi, South Cotabato, Magpet, M'lang, Cotabato, Bagumbayan, Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat, Nabunturan, Davao De Oro, and City of Zamboanga.
Lower levels of intensity were also detected in various other regions. The relevant authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
