Among the areas affected by the red alert status raised by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) on the Luzon grid were places in Taguig City such as Barangay Maharlika, Barangay Upper Bicutan, and Arca South yesterday, June 1, 2024.

Joe Zaldarriaga, the spokesperson for the Manila Electric Company (Meralco), stated they needed to carry out manual load dropping to stretch the power supply.

"We already requested our commercial and industrial customers to de-load to lessen the strain on the power grid," Zaldarriaga said. They were able to de-load more than 200 megawatts of capacity under the Interruptible Load Program.

The supply of electricity from the Luzon Power Grid has been insufficient for several days now, leading to rotational brownouts in Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon.

"Given the challenging situation, we again urge the public to continue practicing energy conservation and efficiency measures," Zaldarriaga reminded.
