The news circulating on the internet about a supposed three-day period of darkness due to the earth passing through the Photon Belts on April 8, 2024, lacks authenticity.
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) affirm that astronomers have observed no evidence of a band of high-energy photons surrounding the Milky Way galaxy.
What is confirmed to occur on April 8 of this year is a total solar eclipse, often referred to as the Great North American Eclipse. However, this event will not be visible from the Philippines.
The eclipse will only be observable in North America, starting from the Pacific Coast, moving in a north-eastern direction towards Mexico, the United States, and Canada, before ending in the Atlantic Ocean.
During the total solar eclipse, some of the aforementioned areas will experience temporary darkness due to the moon passing in front of the sun.
The spread of false news about three days of darkness from April 8 is a result of ideas from New Age and metaphysical groups, who believe that the earth passing through a photon belt might cause unusual events and affect physical and spiritual states.
According to DOST-Pagasa, there is no scientific evidence to support this theory. DOST-Pagasa also adds that any belief that our planet's motion through a photon belt can create changes on earth is not supported by the laws of physics.
