Classes in public schools across Taguig City continue amidst the extreme heat brought about by the El Niño phenomenon.

According to the local government of Taguig City, they are taking measures to ensure students and teachers from the 52 public schools in Taguig remain comfortable and protected as on-site classes take place.

A consultation meeting was held on April 2, 2024, by the local government of Taguig and the Department of Education Taguig-Pateros (DepEd Tapat) to discuss measures relating to the continuation of classes during the exceptionally hot weather, which has reached 43 degrees Celsius.

Following the consultation meeting, Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano directed the Taguig City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), and the TOWER - Taguig Open Weather and Environmental Reporting System to report daily temperature and weather conditions to guide the residents of Taguig.

"By understanding the local heat index, the community can take appropriate precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke," Cayetano said.

The DepEd Tapat Division of Taguig City and Pateros Schools Division Superintendent Alejandro Ibañez issued a directive easing rules regarding attire for teachers and students.

"Teachers can opt for polo shirts, while students are allowed to wear P.E. uniforms, jogging pants, and white shirts," the DepEd-Tapat directive states.

Any outdoor activities have been prohibited from 10:00 in the morning until 4:00 in the afternoon due to the excessive heat, to safeguard the health of the students.

All air conditioning units in the 52 public schools throughout Taguig City have been inspected and repaired to provide relief to students and their teachers.
