Due to the extreme heat and fierce typhoons that the Philippines experiences, several parents have chosen to home school their children. This is in addition to the issue of sudden disease outbreaks in classrooms that also disrupt the continuation of studies in a regular school setting.

Moreover, the lower cost of homeschooling is one of the reasons for parents' decision to switch their children to this method of learning, especially since they no longer have to pay for school facilities, miscellaneous fees, school uniforms, and even the children's transportation or school service.

In a survey of institutions offering homeschooling in the Philippines, the basic tuition fee ranges from P5,000 to P100,000 per year, depending on the program. There are homeschool providers that are partnered with foreign schools or have foreign accreditation, hence the high cost.

In the latest merger of major education institutions approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the National Teachers College and APEC Schools established the NTC SmartClass Homeschooling Program.

The National Teachers College has a 95-year track record of excellence in teacher education, while APEC Schools are known for their innovative teaching methods.

NTC SmartClass is a homeschooling program for children from Kindergarten to Grade 10. The program recognizes the need for a flexible and comprehensive education solution that meets the needs of modern families. It was developed in response to the need for online learning during the pandemic.

NTC SmartClass tailors instruction to meet the learning needs and interests of each student.

"The program offers flexible study schedules using a learning-by-doing approach. NTC SmartClass gradually forms skills, helping learners understand and retain information effectively as they develop a love for learning," according to NTC.

They have a so-called "triangle of support" where parents, subject matter experts, and academic advisers work together to teach the children.

"The triangle of support ensures that we support each homeschooler along the way and that no one gets left behind, which fosters a love for learning," said Mark Sy, Chief Learning Officer of APEC Schools.

Furthermore, NTC SmartClass assured that they will maintain a "flat and affordable rate" for enrollment. Additional charges will only be applied if there is an addition to the curriculum, but it will not be forced.
