An Indian national who overstayed his permitted stay in the Philippines is now detained at the Bureau of Immigration (BI) Detention Facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Bicutan, Taguig City.

40-year-old Jasbir Singh attempted to fly out of the country from Clark International Airport in Pampanga on April 17, 2024.

He was scheduled to fly to Singapore when the BI Border Control and Intelligence Unit (BCIU) noticed that his emergency travel document lacked a BI stamp. However, his boarding pass had a BI stamp.

According to BI-BCIU acting chief Vincent Bryan Allas, Singh thought he could evade penalties for being an overstaying alien and the immigration fees.

It was found out that Singh arrived in the country on December 9, 2023, and was only permitted to be a tourist in the Philippines for 21 days.

Immigration Commissioner Norman Tansingco stated that the immigration officer who allowed passenger Singh to proceed to the departure gate without appropriate immigration clearance has been relieved of his duties.

"He will be facing an investigation for possible cases of grave misconduct and conduct prejudicial to the interest of the service," said Tansingco.

Tansingco also mentioned that besides BCIU personnel conducting spot checks, they also have off-site monitoring using CCTV cameras to promptly respond to any suspicious activities.
