The original reason for the Israeli envoy's visit to Siargao was a somber one. Yet, it resulted in positive developments after Ambassador Kursh recognized the needs of the paradise island and addressed reported disturbances caused by certain Israeli tourists in the area, particularly in General Luna.
Ambassador Kursh interacted with local leaders, police, tourism stakeholders, business owners, and residents during a recently held town hall discussion in Siargao.
"Yes, there are Israeli tourists whose behavior is unacceptable. To this I say clearly, this behavior is wrong, disrespectful, and unacceptable. I condemn it completely and call anyone harmed by illegal or abusive behavior to report it to the relevant Philippine authorities. The Embassy of Israel fully supports fair and firm enforcement of the law. At the same time, I ask people not to paint all Israelis with the same brush," Ambassador Kursh declared.
She mentioned that she had spoken with several Israeli tourists who love and respect Siargao, and support local businesses there. Many of them, she said, are backpackers seeking peace, the opportunity to surf, and a fresh experience on the island.
"I also ask that broader international political narratives should not overshadow the reality of Siargao as a peaceful and welcoming tourism destination," the ambassador added.
In response to these incidents, the Embassy of Israel in the Philippines has launched an awareness campaign for Israeli tourists in the country, encouraging them to be respectful and mindful that each one of them represents Israel.
"Our message is simple: respect the local culture, respect the law, and respect the community that welcomes you," emphasized Ambassador Kursh.
Before this, there were reports of fistfights and disputes between Israeli tourists at the Siargao Beach Club and other places on the island.
In addition, an online incident went viral involving Israeli tourists allegedly harassing local cafe owners in General Luna for displaying a Palestinian flag in their establishment.
